The Origin of Perceptive PEMF
Karine’s PEMF service is not typical. Her sessions are personalized, with one common theme: creating an environment in which the horse can settle, respond, and guide the work. Understanding why her technique sets her apart requires some context.
Since her early teens, Karine has been tormented by her passion for horses—both poetically and, much to her chagrin, quite literally. Coupled with her fondness for other adrenaline-fueled pursuits, Karine accumulated injuries that eventually took their toll.
Eventually, pain management became a familiar part of Karine’s life: medication, chiropractors, Structural Energetic Therapy, medical massage therapy, an epidural steroid injection, and the steady collection of things one learns to do when discomfort is no longer an occasional visitor but has settled in as chronic pain.
During a particular three-week episode of intense sciatica, one of the horses got hurt. Karine was physically incapable of getting out of bed. Up to that point, none of her coping measures were helping. Medication was not helping. Chiropractic care was not helping. Neither were the massages and SET sessions. But despite the agony, she made her way to the barn to meet the veterinarian.
Along the way, she ran into the neighbors who had come over to see what was happening. With them was a young woman who was there to perform PEMF on their horse. Karine had heard that some folks used PEMF on their horses. She had seen advertisements on social media, but largely dismissed it as another fad. What surprised her, though, was the practitioner talking about how PEMF was being used with people as well. After three weeks of anguish, Karine was desperate and the question suddenly seemed worth asking: Did she work on humans too?
She did.
The young lady began working with Karine once a week, sometimes leaving the machine so Karine could rent it between visits. Eventually, Karine saw past her presumption that PEMF was the next trending fad and bought one of the smaller personal units for herself as it had become her primary pain-management tool, allowing her to wean herself away from reliance on the other measures.
That might have been the end of the story. Except that Karine is a horsewoman at heart, and the more familiar she became with PEMF, the harder it became not to wonder about the horses. She eventually stepped up from the personal unit to a professional equine system and began offering PEMF sessions at surrounding barns.
Years later, clients began noticing that there was something different about Karine’s sessions. Woven through their comments was a simple, almost inconsequential idea in retrospect—not all PEMF experiences were the same.
Initially, the equipment seemed to be the obvious explanation. Manufacturers build different systems, and Karine had developed a clear preference for the equipment she used. Clients occasionally reinforced that conclusion. One horse had already received PEMF using another manufacturer’s system, without a response the owner considered worthwhile. Karine worked with the horse, and the experience was markedly different. Simple enough. Perhaps it was the machine.
But then came another horse. This horse had also received PEMF before, and again the owner had been disappointed with the experience. But this time, the previous practitioner had been using the same equipment Karine used. That became interesting. The machine could no longer explain the difference.
So what was it that Karine was doing so differently? The answer turned out to have less to do with knowing how to operate the equipment than with knowing how to use it.
Karine has enough working knowledge of cellular biology to understand the basic concepts surrounding the technology. Her registered-nursing background contributes the disciplines of observation and care, while her understanding of basic equine anatomy and more than four decades with horses give her an essential component of her technique—perception.
Karine does not simply place PEMF equipment on a horse, start the machine, and wait. She watches. An eye changes. A mouth softens. Posture shifts. A horse guards one area, leans into another, or quietly communicates that what she is doing there is particularly welcome. Sometimes Karine begins with little more than her hands. A gentle poke here. Pressure there. A feel along one area while she watches what happens somewhere else.
The horse answers—not with words, of course, but with the same things horses have always used: expression, posture, movement, tension, relaxation, avoidance, and acceptance. Karine knows how to notice those clues. More importantly, she knows how to interpret them.
Placement changes. Attention moves. The session becomes less about where a pad is supposed to go and more about what the horse standing in front of her is actually communicating. It is a distinction easily missed—and just as easily dismissed—unless you know to look for it.
Two practitioners may arrive with the same machine. Both may know how to operate it. Both may place the equipment on the same general area of the horse. And yet the experience can be very different.
Karine’s biological education gives her a working understanding of the basic concepts surrounding the technology. Her nursing background contributes the disciplines of observation and care. Her knowledge of equine anatomy gives her a map. And her decades with horses provide something the machine cannot: the ability to recognize when the horse is answering back.
PEMF did not replace any of those things. It gave her another tool with which to use them. This has become central to Tech n Tack’s larger philosophy of refining the fundamental equine skillset. Technology can be remarkable. But without the willingness to engage the horse on its own terms—to observe, adapt, and respond—the practitioner risks turning another useful tool into little more than another novelty in a bin of fads and hype.
As with so much of what eventually became Tech n Tack, the most important part turned out to be the easiest one to overlook.
